This is personal.

I’ve been brewing this post for a looooong while. Sitting on it until I felt I knew more clearly what I wanted to write about. This is personal. And it is political. And it is current. We are living in the middle of the consequences of austerity. And we are hanging on to the remains of what have always (in my lifetime) been pretty excellent healthcare experiences. Standing in A&E with my twelve year old on a trolley two weeks ago brought much into sharp focus. The relief of being able to access a free […]

We’re plodding along ;-)

My blogging habits have become somewhat sporadic over the last few months. I’ve got a few blogs in the pipeline, but not ones that seem to be coming together easily to be honest. Our desktop computer died a few months back, so although I can write drafts on my phone, I can only post to the blog when Mr Six doesn’t need the laptop for work stuff. But it’s also because we have changes afoot in our lives and it hasn’t felt like the right time to write about them until now. I’m not good […]

Her mind is whirring…

Think of those nights when you get into bed and as soon as your head hits the pillow, there’s a veritable list of vitally important tasks that should have been done weeks ago streaming through your head. Think of those nights when you wake with a start, having heard ‘a noise’ in the middle of the night. Your heart is pounding. Your mouth is dry. You are on high alert as you listen for other unusual noises. It takes what feels like lifetime for your heart rate to slow and for your brain to switch […]

To push the button or leave well alone…

When I was university, I had a friend who swore by Sudocrem. Whenever she got a little spot popping up, she’d whip out the Sudocrem and smear a bit over the affected area to try and soothe it away. I also had another friend who would simply attack a spot at any and every opportunity, trying to squeeze out the bad stuff! Is it better to go with a couple of weeks of soreness without it coming to a head before it fades away? Or to get the bad stuff out at the first available […]

Watoto: what a 24 hours!

The Watoto choir arrived on Friday lunchtime and left on Saturday lunchtime. The concert at our church was on Friday evening. Our time with them was brief, but they have left a huge imprint on our hearts. On Friday afternoon when we arrived at church, the choir had not long been there and the kids were generally really shy and quiet. They did some sound checking and their team of Aunties and Uncles were setting up for the evening event. Little Legs stayed very close by me, with her hands over her ears and a look […]

Minions, Trump and smells

Smell is a funny thing. Funny haha, and funny peculiar. I was laughing with my girls a few days ago about smells. Yes, we were talking about breaking wind and all the various names people give to it! And yes, the name of the American President had started the whole silly conversation. The girls just find farts, trumps, parps, pops (whatever you may call them!) hilarious! I think that’s why the Minions are such favourites here 😉 The girls’ cousins have a Minions fart gun toy, which often come out to play when we go over […]

Marking their territory

This morning I had to talk to our youngest two about ‘marking their territory’. I used the imagery of how cats and dogs frequently wee when they’re outside because they use their urine to mark their territory, to let other cats and dogs know that this is their turf. Mr Six and I have been discussing these behaviours this last few days, as we have noticed distinctly territorial behaviours happening. Mr Six teases me about comparing them to animal behaviours (which I understand), but they help me to understand and call out for myself what […]

Happy birthday Little Bud!

Eight years ago today, our beautiful bundle of blessing burst into our lives. We had not long lost my Mum and I remember struggling to feel happy about much, to be honest. The grief was raw. And yet, in the midst of the pain and heartache, this little girl was a complete joy. Sure, she slept less than the other two. Significantly less! She refused point blank to take a bottle until she had to when I went back to work six months later! She was feisty and loud. She and I took a trip to London […]

Splitting

“Mummy, why does Little Legs want to be so mean to me and try to tear Happy Dreamer and my bestest cousin away from me all the time?” Yesterday afternoon Mr Six and I had our first PAS session. Time with our new PAS SW, who will hereafter be known as ‘The Play Lady’. Last night we had put Little Legs to bed and were talking to the big three about the PAS sessions that will be coming up. We revisited why and how Little Legs had come home to be part of our family. […]

Our 2016

Mr Six and I were chatting last night…well around 1am, after we had seen in the New Year and finally got the girls into bed. Chatting about our 2016. We were reminding each other of the reality of how 2016 was for our little family; about all the great things that we have experienced or worked hard at over the year. He was listing the adventures and fun stuff we have done, while I was selecting adjectives such as ‘challenging’, ‘exhausting’, ‘adventurous’ and ‘full to emotional capacity’! We’ve seen and read lots of blog posts and media pieces about […]
